Frequently asked questions
Are fishing clubs only for experienced, frequent anglers?
No, most new members have limited experience. All our members are willing to share their skills, knowledge, and stories. We strive to be a family club that supports Junior, Family and Senior participation. We always welcome new members.
Do I have to own a boat?
No, many places we fish are suitable for land-based fishing, kayak-based fishing, small boats or big boats. It is easy to get a ride with other boat owners within WPAC, and this is a great way to learn the basics of safe boating in an enjoyable atmosphere.
Where does WPAC fish?
Our most popular fishing destination is Westernport Bay where our members fish competitively and socially on a regular basis. Come down to the club house on a meeting night to find out where the fish are biting! WPAC competitions take members to many areas of the state in a variety of environments including Port Philip Bay, Port Welshpool, San Remo, Bemm River, Yarrawonga, the Gippsland Lakes and Rivers, and many other interesting fishing locations.
Do I have to know a member to join?
Definitely not, we actively encourage new members and guests are more than welcome in our clubrooms whenever they are open.
Do I have to live locally?
No, we have members who live in regional areas and can only fish the occasional competition with us but still keep in contact on a regular basis.
What age groups are there?
WPAC welcomes members and guests of all ages and our competitions are usually divided into the following age groups:
Male (16 years or older)
Female (16 years or older)
Junior (Under 16 years)
Senior (Retired members able to fish midweek)
What about women and young families?
Our female anglers are just as keen as the blokes and WPAC encourages each family member to wet a line, young or old!
Do you have boat launching facilities?
Yes. Our clubrooms are adjacent to Hastings Boat Ramp. We couldn’t be in a better location to launch.
What does it cost to join?
Membership categories and fee structure is as follows:
Family Membership - $125
Single Membership - $125
Pensioner Membership - $90
Student Membership - $90
Junior Membership (under 16) - $68
Game Fishing Association of Victoria Membership - $28 (Junior GFAV - $7 )
Members are encouraged to participate in all elements of the club including Fishing, Social Activities, Fundraising and Working Bees.
Clubroom facilities are available to all members upon application to the committee.
How do I contact WPAC?
The best way to contact us is to drop into the clubrooms (next to Hastings Boat Ramp, Marine Parade, Hastings) from 8pm on the 3rd Wednesday of any month. One of our members will gladly show you around our facilities. We can also be contacted by Email or visit our contact page if you have any further queries.
Why join?
There are many reasons. If you’re starting out, a club is the best place to learn in a short amount of time. It’s a great place to take your experiences, combine them with other people's experiences and drastically shorten your learning curve. It’s also a great place to make great friendships and find out that you are not alone. Other people experience the same things that you do — the success, excitement and the challenges of fishing.
If you don't have a boat and are thinking about buying one, a fishing club can be a great resource. If you are trying to decide on which type of boat to purchase, being in a club can be an efficient way to test ride a number of different boats before actually making a purchase.
Clubs give you a chance to travel and give you a voice to campaign for better facilities for all anglers, to look after conservation issues that affect the bays and our waterways. It’s also a great environment for kids to grow up in.
